This course provides an account of the development of tactical medicine in law enforcement. Beginning in the 1950s specialised police units began to emerge in America as a response to civil disorder and crime. Over time such units recognised the need for close medical support in the tactical environment, spurring adaptation and ultimately progress. Although many police organisations have and continue to contribute to tactical medicine, law enforcement organisations of Los Angeles County are notable for leading this progress. This course concludes with the importance of continued contribution, of both organisations and individual officers, to continue the evolution of tactical medicine in law enforcement.
