SAR MED Skill Enhancement

Prerequisites:
Completion of a recognized basic medical or first responder course (EMR, WFR, EMT, Paramedic, or equivalent). Prior SAR experience recommended.

Content:

  • Medical considerations specific to search and rescue environments
  • Patient assessment and decision-making in austere settings
  • Hemorrhage control and trauma management with limited resources
  • Prolonged field care principles for delayed evacuation scenarios
  • Environmental injuries (hypothermia, heat illness, altitude, immersion)
  • Packaging, movement, and evacuation of casualties during SAR operations
  • Integration of medical care with SAR team objectives and safety considerations

This course is designed to enhance the medical capabilities of Search and Rescue personnel operating in remote, austere, and resource-limited environments. SAR MED Skill Enhancement focuses on adapting medical skills to the realities of prolonged operations, challenging terrain, adverse weather, and delayed access to definitive care.

Students will develop practical approaches to casualty assessment, treatment prioritization, and patient management while balancing operational demands and team safety. Emphasis is placed on realistic problem-solving, equipment considerations, and efficient care delivery during SAR missions.
